Lucky Number 7!

Khaleesi now has 7 teeth! She also now has three top teeth, so Ibu is allowing her baby to have a couple small pieces of foods, like melon.

As her baby-led weaning continues, Khaleesi does eat some of mommy’s foods. Khaleesi eats things like special orangutan biscuits, soft fruits (cantaloupe, pineapple, kiwi, cucumber) and leafy greens, like kale and cabbage, which take her a long time to chew with her 7 little teeth!

Snow days!

Flashback Friday to ... SNOW DAYS!

Snow days were play days for the orangutans at the El Paso Zoo. The orangutans had access during the snow, which means they have the option of staying in their warm, behind the scenes living spaces or going out into their habitat areas.

Daddy Butch likes the snow! He’ll stay out in the orangutan habitat and enjoy the weather. Mommy Ibu avoids stepping on the snow in her habitat, but will swing her way across to find the best patch of grass and sunshine. Khaleesi stays snuggled close to mom.

If you have a little one, you’re probably enjoying getting lots of cold weather snuggles!

When Ibu and Khaleesi were in the habitat, Khaleesi touched snow, but quickly pulled her hand away from the cold. Both Khaleesi and Ibu enjoyed eating the snow! The keeper staff gave the orangutans snow to taste behind the scenes, but they tasted it again while on exhibit.

Go over the edge for Khaleesi ... and cuteness, in general

The El Paso Zoo is all about WILD adventure! Now, thanks the El Paso Zoological Society – you can have a once-in-a-lifetime experience that goes – literally – Over the Edge.

Rappel 12 stories down from the top of the Anson Mills Building on February 20, 2016 to support the El Paso Zoo! This exclusive experience is only available to 100 El Paso participants, or “edgers,” who commit to adventure by fundraising a minimum of $1,000 for wildlife care, education and conservation efforts – for orangutans, like Khaleesi!

Register NOW! Join us at an Over the Edge kickoff party 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the El Paso Zoo. The Party is sponsored by 4Rivers Equipment. Come register to be an edger!

Over the Edge is responsible for all technical aspects of the event, including the insurance, professional staff, and rappelling equipment. There is a $50 registration fee, which will be applied toward the $1,000 fundraising minimum. Edgers must be 18 years old on or before Feb. 21, 2016. It is recommended edgers are between 100 – 300 pounds for the best rappel experience. Accommodations may be made for special needs participants, just let us know!

Hmm, baby face ...

You've got the cutest little, hmm, baby face
There's not another who can take your place
Hmm, baby face, my poor heart is jumpin'
You sure have started somethin' ...
